N. Hill (2015) has suggested that Walter was born in Bilstone, Norton Juxta Twycross, not in Barrow on Soar. His father was a policeman who was continually being moved around the county. His birth was registered in Market Bosworth.

Corporal W Achurch was one of 75 servicemen from the Royal Flying Corps who died during the sinking of the HMS Aragon by torpedo, close to the port of Alexandria on 30/12/1917.
