He was the son of William Chapman a granite quarry worker, born 1872 in Leicestershire and his wife Emma Rebecca Chapman (nee Shaw), born in the 2nd quarter of 1873 in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire, baptised on the 2nd November 1873 in the Parish Church, Mountsorrel and married on the 6th June 1892 in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton. William was born on the 17th November 1897 in Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire and was baptised on the 16th January 1898 in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton, his siblings were, Linda Chapman Shaw, born in the 1st quarter of 1891, baptised on the 8th March 1891 in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton and married on the 23rd December 1916 to George Startin in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton, Harry, born 27th September 1892 and baptised on the 4th June 1893 in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton, Lucy Jane, born 1895, baptised on the 15th December 1895 in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton and married on the 14th June 1919 to George William Hastings in St. Mary’s Church, Hinckley, Leicestershire and Catherine Ann, born 4th June 1900, baptised on the 15th July 1900 in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton and married on the 25th December 1920 to George Langham in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton, all his siblings were born in Stoney Stanton, in March 1901 the family home was at Huncote Road, Stoney Stanton. In April 1911 William was employed as a boot and shoe trade worker and was residing in the family home at Huncote Road, Stoney Stanton, together with his father, a quarryman hewer, his mother and siblings, Linda, Harry, a quarryman hewer, Catherine, Julia, born 28th May 1902, baptised on the 20th June 1902 in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton and married on the 3rd November 1934 to Leonard Benjamin Bagby in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton, Reginald, born 28th April 1905, baptised on the 11th June 1905 in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton and married on the 23rd May 1928 to Emily Elizabeth Padbury in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton, Lilian Avis, born 1st June 1909 and baptised on the 18th July 1909 in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton and (Elizabeth) Myra, born 2nd April 1911, baptised on the 21st May 1911 in St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton and married in the 4th quarter of 1936 to Leonard E. Towers in the Hinckley, Leicestershire district, the latter four siblings were all born in Stoney Stanton.
William’s Army enlistment documents do not survive, all that is known of his military service is that he was serving as a Private with the 482nd Agricultural Company of the Labour Corps, having been allotted the service number 264081, at the time of his death on the 10th November 1918 he was serving at Cross Roads Farm, Empingham in Rutland, and was interred four days later in the Churchyard of St. Michael’s Church, Stoney Stanton. No cause of death can be confirmed from presently available documents, and the assumption is that he could have been a victim of the influenza epidemic (Spanish Flu).

William (Billy) was the son of William and Emma Rebekah Chapman of Coronation Cottages, Stoney Stanton
He joined the West Yorkshire Regiment, which was disbanded in May 1917 and the men assigned to the 18th or 19th Labour Corps battalions
He died of wounds in Empingham on 10th November 1918, just one day before the Armistice, a week before his 21st birthday
He was buried in St Michael's churchyard next to his uncle, Frederick Chapman
