He was the son of Thomas Barwell a Quarryman, born 1860 in Carlton Curlieu, Leicestershire and his wife Hannah, born 1866 in Ratcliffe Culey, Leicestershire. Arthur was born in 1886 in Potters Marston, Leicestershire, his siblings were William, born 1881 in Pinwall, Leicestershire and Mary, born 1883 in Pinwall, Leicestershire. In April 1891 the family home was at Huncote Road, Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire. In March 1901 Arthur was employed as a Stone Mill Worker and was residing in the family home at Huncote Road, Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire together with his parents and siblings, William, Mary, and Ethel, born 1892 in Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Arthur was employed as a Quarryman and was residing in the family home at Huncote Road, Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire together with his parents and sibling Ethel.
