He was the son of Charles Bates a Granite Quarryman Blocker, born 1867 in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire and his wife Maria, born 1871 in St. John's, Newfoundland. Bertie was born in 1899 in Rothley, Leicestershire, his siblings were Nellie Elizabeth, born 1894 in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire and Robert Butt Bates, born 1901 born in Rothley, Leicestershire, in March 1901 the family home was at Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley, Leicestershire, this being situated within the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. Mary. In April 1911 Bertie was a Schoolboy and was residing in the family home at Rothley Lane, Mountsorrel, Leicestershire together with his parents and siblings Nellie, Robert and Reginald Charles, born 1904 in Rothley, Leicestershire. Bertie was serving with 1st/5th Bn. London Rifle Brigade, but at time of death had been posted to 2nd/8th Bn. Post Office Rifles.
