View Further Details Memorial Type:Tablet or Plaque or Board Ref: WMP0274 Other Designation: N/A Notes: Coalville Times article - Friday 17th February 1950 Bronze Memorial Dedicated at Coalville Legion Club A large bronze memorial, panelled in oak, and bearing the names of over 400 men of Coalville and District who fell in two world wars, was dedicated by the Vicar of Coalville (the Rev. A. S. Oscroft) at a service in the bar of the British Legion Club on Sunday evening (12th February 1950). The Vicar is Chaplain of the Branch. Brig. R. S. Abbott, President of the Coalville Group of the British Legion Council, unveiled the Memorial, and this ceremony was followed by the sounding of the Last Post and the Reveille by Mr E. Williams. Standard bearers on duty were Mr George Wildgoose, M.M. and Mrs A. Horn. A wreath of poppies was given a permanent home at the base of the Memorial by Mrs A. Tester. The service, and arrangements for the unveiling, were made by Mr I. G. Glithero, Coalville secretary of the British Legion. The memorial is a finely executed work with four corner insets showing an Aircraft Carrier, an Anti-Aircraft Gun, a Fighter Plane and a Flanders Poppy. An inscription at the top reads "They Live, And Those Who Knew Will Not Forget". The oak framework came from the original club Memorial which bore only the names of those who fell in the 1914-18 war. In an introductory address Mr Clarke (Chairman of the Coalville Club) said that the committee responsible for the Memorial had decided that it should be worthy of the men whose names were to be inscribed on it.
