Polymer plaque mounted on Bardon Granite stone, inscribed with the names of 50 Coalville soldiers who left from Hugglescote in 1914, to fight on the western front in WWI. Accompanied by a row of 50 Rowan trees.

View Further Details Memorial Type:Plaque, Tree or Avenue Ref: WMP2290 Notes: An polymer plaque, mounted on a large granite stone, inscribed with the names of the first 'Famous Fifty' volunteer soldiers from the Coalville area, who marched in 1914 from St John the Baptist Church in Hugglescote to the train station in Coalville and on to France to fight on the western front. Of the 50 who left, 28 were killed during the course of the war. To commemorate the centenary of the event, a row of 50 rowan trees were planted on Millfield recreation ground, with an unveiling ceremony which took place on the 2nd November 2014. During the service, the 50 names were read out by Captain Robert Allen MBE, Chair of the Royal Leicester Tigers Association and 50 pigeons were released.
