He was the son of Amos Barratt a railway wheel tapper, born on the 15th January 1869 in Kirby Bellars, Leicestershire (son of Joseph Barratt, 1837-1887 and Mary Ann Manchester, 1846-1915) and his wife Kezia Barratt (nee Hulbert, married in the January quarter of 1891 in the Blaby, Leicestershire district), a hosiery trade seamer, born in the January quarter of 1873 in Kilby, Leicestershire and baptised on the 17th August 1873 in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Kilby (daughter of John Hulbert, 1843-1904 and Hannah Hurd (Heard), 1843-1929). Amos was born in the April quarter of 1897 in Wigston Magna, his siblings were Bertie, born in the April quarter of 1891, Ernest, born on the 4th November 1892, Horace, born on the 1st December 1895, and Wilfrid, born on the 22nd July 1898, all his siblings were born in Wigston Magna, in March 1901 the family home was at 3, Gladstone Street, Wigston Magna. In April 1911 Amos was employed as a boot trade finisher, and was residing in the family home at 39, Victoria Street, Wigston Magna, together with his father, a railway labourer, his mother and siblings, Bertie, an assistant carrier, Ernest, an apprentice tailor, Horace, a boot trade finisher, Wilfrid, a schoolboy, David, a schoolboy, born on the 14th June 1901, Caroline, a schoolgirl, born on the 19th November 1904 and Florence Hannah, a schoolgirl, born on the 18th March 1907, the latter three siblings were all born in Wigston Magna. Amos’s older brother Bertie, died on the 15th May 1920.
FAMILY NOTE: Amos also had the following siblings, Joseph, born in the January quarter of 1900 in Wigston Magna, and who died in the April quarter of 1900 in Wigston Magna and George, born on the 2nd August 1915 in Wigston Magna.

The War Diary records: 27 Sep-18 – Trenches North West of BELLENGLISE. Battalion ordered to take over front line trenches North West of BELLENGLISE. Operation Order No.226. Relief complete by 4.00am 28-9-18. Enemy very active. “D” Company under Captain G. H. BALL took over the Outpost Line, and are engaged bombing the enemy. “A” Company under 2nd Lieutenant L. L. TYLER is in Reserve at ASCENSION FARM, Battalion issued with life-belts for crossing the ST. QUENTIN Canal.
The War Diary records: 28 Sep-18 - Trenches North West of BELLENGLISE. “D” Company under Captain BALL was counter-attacked, some enemy got into our trenches but were ejected, leaving two prisoners in our hands. This was at 6.00am, but the fighting continues. At 11.00am, by a fresh strong counter-attack, “D” Company was driven out of their trenches to the trenches of the 1/6th Battalion NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT, who were holding the Outpost North of “D” Company. Under orders from Lieutenant Colonel A. WHITE, “C” Company, under Captain E. J. H. MEYNELL counter-attacked the enemy, but were unable to drive him out of the Outpost Line. Fighting was very severe indeed. Our casualties amounted to one Officer killed (2nd Lieutenant E. C. BRACEY) and a number of men. Orders came to withdraw to the main front line at dusk. This was done without any further casualties. “A” Company under 2nd Lieutenant L. L. TYLER, who were in Reserve, were ordered up, and were to carry forward the special stores required for crossing the Canal on the 29th instant. These were brought up and work carried on alright. (sic).
