He was the son of Samuel Kirk, a shoe trade finisher, born 1863 in Leicester and his wife Mary Ann Kirk (nee Frost), a hosiery trade mender, born 1864 in Leicester. Samuel was a poor law clerk and was born in 1886 in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 22, Kenyon Street, Leicester. In April 1911 Samuel was employed as a district auditor’s clerk and was residing as a boarder at 1, Maud Street, Darlington, County Durham. On Wednesday February 7th 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL CASUALTIES” – Mrs Kirk, of 23, Cannon Street, Belgrave, has received intimation that her son, Corpl. Samuel Kirk, West Yorks. Regiment (formerly of the Durham Light Infantry) has died of wounds. He was severely wounded in the leg on Sunday, January 28th, by a trench mortar shell, and died the same night.
