He was the son of the late James Ambrose, and his wife Ruth Ferrin. William had five siblings, Harry, Ruth Elizabeth, Margaret Mary, Sarah Maria and Norah Annie. His father was killed in action on the 15th February 1918 whilst serving with the Labour Corps., and his brother Harry was killed in action on the 6th August 1918.
