He was the son of John Sam Athorn a post office telegraphist, born 1853 in Liverpool, Lancs., and his wife Ellen Athorn (nee Imisson, married in the 4th quarter of 1886 in the Leicester district), born 1866 in Nottingham. George was a clerk and was born in 1889 in Leicester, his siblings were Stewart John, born 1896 and Gertrude, born 1891, both his siblings were born in Leicester. In April 1911 the family home was at 77, Mere Road, Leicester. In the 2nd quarter of 1911 George married Gertrude M. Hewitt in the Leicester district., they resided at 3, Cecil Road, Leicester. In the 1st quarter of 1919, George’s widow married William A. Hannaway in the Leicester district.
