He was the son of James Dinnis Brand a gas office clerk, born 1858 in Leicester and his wife Mary Jane, born 1862 in Burton Lazars, Leics. William Arthur was born in 1895 in Leicester, he had one sibling, a brother James, born 1887 in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 29, Filbert Street, Leicester. In April 1911 William was residing in the family home at 29, Filbert Street, Leicester, together with his parents. On the 31st January 1920 the Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys published a Roll of Honour, this recorded that William had been a pupil at the school between the years 1907 to 1911.
