He was the son of Richard Arthur Bowes a wholesale draper’s manager, born 1871 in Heanor, Derbys., and his wife Kitty, born 1870 in Leicester. Arthur Ellis was born in 1898 in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 23, Severn Street, Leicester. In April 1911 Ellis was a scholar and was residing in the family home at 18, Mecklenburg Street, Leicester together with his parents. On the 31st January 1920 the Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys in Leicester published a Roll of Honour in which Ellis is not shown, however his name appears on the memorial within the school grounds, and also on the Roll of Honour that is displayed in the entrance foyer to the school. The War Diary for today records. Relieved the 1st/5th Battn LINCOLNSHIRE REGT in CAMBRIN NORTH SUB SECTION. Right Coy A (BROWN). Left Coy B (CASHMORE). Support Coy D (FLYNN). Reserve Coy C (LEA). Enemy artillery active during relief, no casualties. Battn HQ shelled with fast 77mm shell from noon till 2.00pm.
