George was the sole survivor from the crash. It is believed that George was the Fwd gunner but at the time of the incident was sitting in or near to the Wireless operator position in the centre of the fuselage. He was badly burnt as a result of the crash and subsequent fire. Initially he was taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary but eventually ended up at the notorious Queen Victoria Hospital at East Grinstead under the care of Sir Archibald McIndoe.
