He was the son of Charles Pell, an agricultural labourer, born 1857 in Great Staughton, Huntingdonshire and his wife Eliza Pell (nee Cowley, married in the 4th quarter of 1879 in the St. Neots, Huntingdonshire district), born 1860 in Great Staughton. William Charles was born in the 1st quarter of 1880 in Great Staughton, and was baptised on the 15th February 1880, also residing in the family home was William’s widowed maternal grandmother, Sarah Cowley, a school charwoman, born 1815 in Graffham, Huntingdonshire, in April 1881 the family home was at Highway, Great Staughton, St. Neots, Huntingdonshire. In the 3rd quarter of 1884, William’s father died, aged 28 in the St. Neots, Huntingdonshire district. In the 4th quarter of 1885, William’s widowed mother married John Mayes in the St. Neots, Huntingdonshire district. In April 1891 William was employed as an agricultural labourer and was residing in the family home at The Green, Great Staughton, St. Neots, Huntingdonshire, together with his step father, John Mayes, an agricultural labourer, born 1862 in Great Staughton, his mother, his widowed maternal grandmother Sarah Cowley and his half blood sibling, Louisa Mayes, born 1887 in Great Staughton. In March 1901 William was employed as a domestic gardener and was residing at The Yard, Great Staughton, St. Neots, Huntingdon, this being the family home of his paternal grandfather, James Pell an agricultural labourer, born 1834 in Huntingdonshire. In April 1911 William was employed as a domestic gardener and was residing in the family home at The Gardens, Ulverscroft, Woodhouse, Leicestershire together with his wife Emily Elizabeth Pell (nee Hackett, married on the 26th February 1910 in the St. Neots, Huntingdonshire district), born 1881 in Great Staughton and their son Stanley William, born on the 12th January 1911 in Ulverscroft.

Local Casualties

Mrs Pell, of Markfield, is informed that her husband, Gunner W. Pell (35) R.G.A. was killed in action on July 5th. He was formerly employed in The Gardens, Ulverscroft, and was of great assistance to the local Horticultural Society. On Sunday evening a memorial service was held at the Parish Church, where he had been a valued member of the choir. He leaves two young children.
