He was the son of John Hall, a hosiery trade warehouseman, born 1842 in Leicester and his wife Ada Hall (nee Ludlam, married on the 14th November 1871 in St. Mary’s Church, Oadby, Leicestershire), born 1853 in Oadby, Leicestershire. Sidney John was born in the 3rd quarter of 1890 in Leicester, he had one sibling, Bertram Henry, a shoe mercers clerk, born 25th May 1873 in Leicester, in 1891 the family home was at 47, Avon Street, Leicester. In March 1901 John was residing in the family home at 47, Avon Street, Leicester, together with his father, living on his own means, his mother and brother Bertram, a shoe trade clerk. In April 1911 Sidney was employed as a compositor and was residing in the family home at 1, Hartopp Road, Leicester, together with his widowed mother.
