Private Benner was serving with the 3rd Battalion The Queen's Regiment at the time of his murder. Originally from Southern Ireland he was abducted by the IRA tortured and murdered during a visit to his fiancee who lived in the South.

Robert Benner served in 4th R Anglian in Malta, Gillingham and Bahrain. He then served in 3rd Bn The Queen's Regiment, including in Ballykinnler, Northern Ireland. He was murdered in 1971 while on leave in Eire, aged 25 Years. He is buried in Narborough Cemetery (Grave section H, number 182).
He was the brother of WO2 K W Benner of The Royal Leicestershire and The Royal Anglian Regiments.
