He was the son of John William Hart, a bricklayer, born 1861 in Measham, Leics., and his wife Mary Ann Hart (nee Holbrook, married Q4 1887 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics., district), born 1864 in Measham, Leics. John Charles was born on the 19th January 1894 in Measham, Leics., his siblings were, Mary Ellen, a tape mill packer, born 1887, Fanny Elizabeth, born 1888, Emily, born 1890, Marian A., born 1891, Hannah, born 1893, Benjamin, born 1896, Olive May, born 1900 and Gwendoline Doris, born 1901, all his siblings were born in Measham, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Peggs Close Lane, Measham, Leics. In April 1911 John was employed as a miner and general labourer, and was residing in the family home at Peggs Close, Measham, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Mary, a house keeper, Fanny, a domestic servant, Hannah, a shoe trade worker, Benjamin a miner and waggoner, Laura, a shoe trade worker, Olive, a schoolgirl, Gwendoline, a schoolgirl and Ronald William, a schoolboy, born 1903 in Measham, Leics. John enlisted on the 5th July 1917, and embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 30th October 1917, joining his unit the Howe Battalion on the 17th November 1917 and serving with this unit until being detached from active service on the 23rd December 1917 and admitted to the 149th (Royal Navy) Field Ambulance. He rejoined the Howe Battalion on the 6th January 1918 and was then attached to the 2nd Royal Marine Battalion on the 11th February 1918 and served with this unit until he was gassed on the 12th March 1918. On recovery he was posted to the Hood Battalion on the 13th April 1918 and served with this unit until he was admitted to the 3rd New Zealand Field Ambulance where he died of wounds on the 21st August 1918. John was recorded as an Army Reservist on the 12th Februay 1916.
