He was the son of Thomas and Ellen Ison of Measham, Leics. His enlistment documents record that he gave L. H. Ison of Measham, Leicestershire, England as his next of kin, and stated that his trade or calling was Farmer, and that he was unmarried. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 6 inches in height and had a chest measurement of 33 to 36 inches. His complexion was described as fair with blue eyes and fair hair. It was noted that he had a tattoo on his right forearm. He gave his religion as Church of England.
