He was the son of Lionel Barfield a Brewers Labourer, born 1863 in North Luffenham, Rutland and his wife Martha, born 1864 in Bisbrooke, Rutland. Harold Barnett was born in 1899 in Geeston, Rutland, his siblings were Lionel Harry, born 1891 in Bisbrooke, Rutland and Dorothy Alice, born 1894 in Geeston, Rutland. In April 1911 the family home was at the Brewey Tap, Geeston, Rutland. Harold was a motor mechanic before the war. He embarked for France on the 2nd April 1918. He fought as the number three on a Lewis Gun with the 2nd/6th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment at Kemmel Hill. He was retransferred to the 4th Battalion of that regiment on the 21st May, and went into the front line trenches at the second Battle of the Aisne on the night of the 26th May between Rheims and Soissons, and was killed the following day, together with many others of his Battalion. He was 18 years and 9 months old, of a bright, sunny disposition and endeared himself to everyone with whom he came into contact.
