He was the son of Mr and Mrs Rowland Redmile. He was a draper before initial enlistment in the Leicestershire Regiment, before being transferred to the Rifle Brigade. He embarked on foreign service to France in August 1916, and was promoted to Sergeant a year later in August 1917. He was wounded by gun fire, and died in the ambulance on the way to hospital. He was mentioned in despatches on the 4th August 1917 for volunteering for patrol work, and bringing in very useful information near Langemarck, Belgium.
