He was the son of Mr and Mrs Frederick Johnson. He had served for ten years in India, embarking for France with the original British Expeditionary Force in August 1914, and took part in the historic Retreat from Mons, it was during this action that he was wounded by a shell, dying of his wounds in Netley Hospital in Hampshire.
