He was the son of John William and Anne Hercock of Home Farm, Castor, Northants. He was prior to enlistment a chauffer. He enlisted in the Royal Navy and serving aboard HMS Fingenin was employed on submarine hunting on the transport route between Portsmouth and Le Havre. In April 1915 he transferred to the Army Service Corps., Motor Transport, and was sent to France immediately, he succumbed and subsequently died from influenza and was buried near Lille, France.
