Source: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland.
He was the son of Mr and Mrs J. Dumble of Sheringham, Norfolk, and the husband of Mrs Harold Smith (formerly Dumble) of Renfrew, Ontario, Canada. The War Diary for today records. 6.00am. Small parties of enemy reported working through woods on north bank. They quickly withdrew when fired on. Except for the left which was continuously threatened by parties of the enemy who had crossed the river at JONCHERY, the morning passed without special incident. During the afternoon hostile shelling increased considerably. 6.30pm. The 4th SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGT. (attached 62nd Brigade) on our immediate left flank were driven back to the TILE WORKS – SAPICOURT ROAD. The Battalion reserve was immediately ordered to withdraw to the line previously selected along the LES VAUTES – ROSNAY ROAD. The Company holding the south bank of the river was ordered to hold on as long as possible and to conform to movements of troops on the left. 8.00pm. Information received that enemy was rapidly advancing through woods on west of LES VAUTES – ROSNAY ROAD and as troops were rapidly falling back to high ground east north east of ROSNAY dispositions were altered to conform with them, one picquet being posted at road junction 300 yards north of ROSNAY in touch with FRENCH on left and 2 picquets on high ground north east of ROSNAY.
