Details concerning birth and life of Arthur Henry York Private 22711 9th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

Born at Brampton Ash, Northamptonshire in 1899/1900 (differences in various records) son of Arthur John and Emma York. He had 2 older sisters, Ethel and Maud, twin brothers Albert and Frank and younger brother Jeffery. Arthur senior was a jobbing gardener and so they moved around. At the time of Arthur Henry's enlistment at Market Harborough, 26th March 1917, the family were living at Scoboro Cottage, Theddingworth Road, Lubenham.

Arthur Henry trained at Rugeley, joining the 9th Battalion Duke of Wellington's on 9th December 1917. He embarked from Folkeston to Boulogne on 6th April 1918 and went into action on 11th April. He was killed in action on 1st September and is buried at the A.I.F. Burial Ground 2 Km north of Flers in the Department of the Somme. The village was lost during the German Spring Offensive in March 1918 and retaken at the end of the following August by 10th West Yorks and 6th Dorsets.
