John Henry Holland was born in Radford, Nottinghamshire on 22 June 1920 to Percy Holland and Kate Brooks, who had married at St James' in Nottingham on 18 March 1917. By 1943 when John Henry died, his parents were keeping The Queen's Head on Thornborough Road in Coalville. They had been there from at least 1939 having previously been at The George and Dragon in Thringstone. John Henry had been a railway clerk and went into the navy as an able seaman. He died from head injuries as result of an accidental explosion in Lowestoft, and is buried at Whitwick cemetery.
