He was the son of John Thomas and Clara March. His elder brother William also fell four days before him. The 1911 census records for 11, The Green, Great Bowden, Market Harborough, Leics. John Thomas March, head of the family, widower and a Cartage Inspector, born 1865 in Geddington, Northants., also John, son, single and a Land Agents Clerk, born 1894, William, son, single and a Book Stall Manager, born 1896, Ernest, son, single and a Butchers Apprentice, born 1897, the latter three children were all born in Great Bowden, Leics., additionally Sarah Neale, sister in law, widow and a House Keeper, born 1863 in Great Bowden, Leics., and Sarah Neale, niece, single and a Corset Boner, born 1887 in Aylestone, Leicester. The War Diary entry for the 25th March 1918 records. DOULLENS. At 2.00am Arrived at DOULLENS. Battalion detrained, with the exception of “A” Company who went to MONDICOURT. The Battalion less “A” Company and Transport Section marched to the CITADEL and billeted there. At 5.00am Transport rejoined the Battalion.
