He was the son of Thomas and Sarah Gilbert. The 1911 census records, Thomas Gilbert, married 16 years and head of the family, a Railway Platelayer, born 1872 in Great Bowden, Leics., and his wife Sarah, born 1875 in Dingley, Northants. The children were Margaret Ellen, a Corset Factory Hand, born 1895, Albert John, a Corset Factory Hand, born 1897, Violet Mabel, a Corset Factory Hand, Ernest Arthur, a Schoolboy, born 1900 and William George, a Schoolboy, born 1901, all the children were born in Great Bowden, Leics. The family were residing at 26, The Green, Great Bowden, Leics.
