He was the son of William Chapman a labourer, born 1829 in Market Harborough, Leics., and his wife Martha L., born 1845 in Sutton Bassett, Northants. Thomas William was born in 1877 in Market Harborough, Leics., he had one sibling, a sister Elizabeth J., born 1875 in Market Harborough, Leics., in April 1881 the family home was at Sun Yard, Market Harborough, Leics. In March 1901 Thomas was employed as a corset trade presser and was residing in the family home at 4, Gibbons Row, Market Harborough, Leics., together with his wife, Clara, born 1879 in Mile End, London and their children Albert, born 1898 and Edith, born 1899 in Market Harborough, Leics. The War Diary for the 22nd December recorded that the Battalion were relieved at night by 9th Bn. Norfolk Regiment and returned by train to Camp A, Wood A.30 except for D Coy which went to Machine Gun Farm. The entry for today read as follows:- 22nd to 26th December in billets at Camp A.
