He was the son of Herbert James Burgess a blacksmith, born 1871 in Wrentham, Suffolk and his wife Charlotte Varina Burgess, born 1871in North Walsham, Norfolk. Stanley John was born in 1896 in Erpingham, Norfolk, his siblings were, Herbert James, born 1895, Ivy Eleanor, born 1898 and Violet Hannah, born 1900, all his siblings were born in Erpingham, Norfolk, in March 1901 the family home was at School Lane, Erpingham, Norfolk. In April 1911 Stanley was employed as a stable boy and was residing in the family home at Erpingham, Norfolk, together with his parents and siblings, Herbert, Ivy, Violet, Daisy, born 1904, Eva, born 1907 and Iris, born 1909, the latter three siblings were all born in Erpingham, Norfolk.
