He was the son of Charles William Bromley a groom, born 1864 in Kibworth, Leics., and his wife Mary Rebecca, born, 1864 in Foxton, Leics. Alfred James was born in 1890 in Oxendon, Northants, his siblings were, Charles W., born 1888 and Gertrude Mary, born 1890, both his siblings were born in Oxendon, Northants., in April 1891 the family home was at Farndon Hall, Great Oxendon, Northants. In March 1901 Alfred was residing in the family home at School Street, Great Oxendon, Northants., together with his parents and siblings, Harriett Madeline, born 1884 in Foxton, Leics., Charles, Gertrude, Ethel May, born 1893, Francis Arthur, born 1895, Norah Isabel, born 1896, Ivy Elizabeth, born 1898 and Harry Stafford, born 1900, the latter five siblings were all born in Oxendon, Northants. In April 1911 Alfred was employed as a journeyman grocer and was residing in the family home at 120, Logan Street, Market Harborough, Leics., together with his father, now a labourer, his mother and siblings, Harriett, Gertrude, Ethel, Francis, Norah, Ivy, Harry, Vera Phyllis, born 1902 in Oxendon, Northants. His younger brother Francis Arthur fell in action.
