He was the son of Elizabeth Bland, born 1857 in Lutton, Lincolnshire, Arthur John was born in the 4th quarter of 1898 at Church End, Finchley, Middlesex, his father was recorded as being at the front, in March 1901 the family home was at Bury House, Gruniesen Road, Finchley, Middlesex. In April 1911 Arthur was a schoolboy and was residing at 33, Bowden Lane, Market Harborough, Leics., this being the family home of his paternal uncle, Elias Bland, an Assembly Room Hall Keeper, born 1861 in Great Glen, Leics., and his wife Elizabeth Ann Bland (nee Atkinson, married in the 3rd quarter of 1895 in the Market Harborough, Leics. district), born 1867 in Lubenham, Leics.
