He was the son of Edward Nicholas a domestic groom, born 1861 in Worcester and his wife Emma, born 1864 in Tugby, Leicestershire. Sidney was born in 1898 in Tugby, Leicestershire, his siblings were, Ethel, born 1890, Edith, born 1892, Edward, born 1894 and John M., born 1896, all his siblings were born in Tugby, Leicestershire, in March 1901 the family home was at The Cottage, Tugby, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Sidney was employed as a newspaper boy and was residing in the family home at Tugby, Leicestershire together with his parents and siblings, Emma, born 1901 and Walter, born 1901, both siblings were born in Tugby, Leicestershire. On Friday January 12th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL CASUALTIES” The following casualties were included in yesterday’s official list. MISSING – GLOUCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT. Nicholas, 37179 S. (Tugby).
