He was the son of William Lawson Walker, an agricultural labourer, born 1851 in Twyford, Leicestershire and his wife Sarah Walker, born 1851 in Market Overton, Rutland. Joseph was born in the 2nd quarter of 1888 in Twyford, his siblings were, William Robert, a schoolboy, born 1879, Elizabeth Lawson, a schoolgirl, born 1882, John George, a schoolboy, born 1885 and Mary Jane, born 1891, all his siblings were born in Twyford, in April 1891 the family home was at Twyford, Leicestershire. In March 1901Joseph was absent from the family home in Twyford, residing there was his father, an agricultural labourer, his mother and siblings William, an agricultural labourer, John, an agricultural labourer, Mary and Walter Roland, born 1894 in Twyford, Joseph was employed as a farm yard boy and was residing as a servant at Oxes Cottage, Loddington, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Joseph was employed as a farm cowman and was residing in the family home at Freeby, Leicestershire together with his wife Betsy Walker (nee Roe, married in the 2nd quarter of 1906 in the Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire district), born 1887 in Freeby, Leicestershire and their children, Mary Elizabeth, born 1907 and Edith Annie, born 1908, both children were born in Freeby.
