He was the son of Charles E. Burton a bricklayer’s labourer, born 1870 in Birmingham, Warwickshire and his wife Sarah Jane Burton (nee Robbins), born 1871 in Witherley, Leicestershire. Stanley Gordon Edward was born in the April quarter of 1897 in Witherley and baptised on the 9th January 1898 in St. Peter’s Church, Witherley, his siblings were, Charles Henry, born 1896 and George, born 1899, both his siblings were born in Witherley, also residing with the family were two cousins, Clarence Cain Burton, born 1886 in Birmingham and John Samuel Robbins, born 1891 in Witherley, and an uncle, George Robbins, born 1876 in Witherley, in March 1901 the family home was at Brook Side, Witherley. In April 1911 Stanley was employed working at a coal wharf and was residing in the family home at Witherley, together with his father, now a builder’s handyman, his mother and siblings, Charles, George, William, born 1902, John, born 1904, Thomas, born 1905 and Gladys, born 1911, the latter four siblings were all born in Witherley.
