He was the adopted son of Amos Allen, a brick trade presser, born 1849 in Whitwick, Leics., and his wife Julia Allen (nee Hutchinson, married Q2 1870 in the Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. district), born 1852 in Whitwick, Leics. Alfred John Wilson, was born on the 28th March 1892 in Whitwick, Leics., and was adopted and resided at Silver Street, Whitwick, together with the children of his adoptive parents., Mary E., born 1875, Amos, a brick trade presser, born 1880, Margaret, a dressmaker, born 1883 and Mary E., a hosiery trade worker, born 1885, all the children were born in Whitwick, Leics. In April 1911 Alfred was employed as a brickyard labourer and was residing in the family home at Silver Street, Whitwick, together with his adoptive parents. Alfred enlisted on the 26th June 1915 and embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 18th September 1916, joining his unit, the Hood Battalion on the 15th November 1916, and serving in that unit until the 2nd February 1917 when he was detached from active service and admitted to hospital. He re-joined the Hood Battalion on the 13th February 1917 and served with this unit, until the 1st June 1917, when he suffered a sprained left ankle, during this period he was wounded on the 7th May 1917, but remained on duty, He re-joined the Hood Battalion on the 10th July 1917 and served in this unit until the 7th November when he suffered a sprained left ankle. He re-joined the Hood Battalion on the 15th June 1918 and served with this unit until he was killed in action on the 21st August 1918. Alfred was a 2nd Class Physical Training Instructor.

LOCAL CASUALTIES

Leading-Seaman A. J. Wilson, of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, was killed in action on August 21st, news to this effect having been forwarded by the Admiralty to Mr and Mrs A. Allen, of Silver Street, Whitwick, with whom Wilson formerly resided. The deceased was an old boy of the Whitwick Church School and a popular member of the Whitwick Gymnasium, where the experience gained was such as to enable him to act as an instructor while in a training camp after joining the Forces.

LOCAL CASUALTIES

Mr and Mrs Amos Allen, of 32, Silver Street, Whitwick, have received news that their adopted son, Leading-Seaman Alfred John Wilson, R.N.V.R. was killed in action on August 21st. Before the war he was a shunter at the Whitwick Colliery, and a popular member of the Whitwick Gymnasium. After joining the army, he was appointed gymnastic instructor while in the training camp.
