He was the son of William Wells, a bricklayer’s labourer, born in the 1st quarter of 1848 in Whetstone, Leicestershire and his wife Elizabeth Wells (nee Beasley, married on the 26th May 1874 in Whetstone parish church), a hosiery trade stitcher, born 1853 in Whetstone. Thomas, a schoolboy was born on the 1st December 1879 in Whetstone, and was baptised on the 2nd May 1880 in Whetstone parish church, his siblings were, John William Beasley, a schoolboy, born in the 2nd quarter of 1874 and baptised on the 1st November 1874 in Whetstone parish church and Joseph, a schoolboy, born in the 4th quarter of 1877, and baptised on the 3rd February 1878 in Whetstone parish church, both his siblings were born in Whetstone, in April 1881 the family home was in Whetstone. Thomas’ mother died in July 1884 aged 33, and was buried on the 29th July in Whetstone. In April 1891 Thomas was employed as an errand boy and was residing in the family home at Toller Street, Kettering, Northamptonshire together with his father, a bricklayer and his step mother Sarah Elizabeth Wells (nee Smith, married in the 4th quarter of 1888 in the Market Harborough, Leicestershire district), born 1852 in Gosport, Hampshire, and his sibling Joseph, a boot and shoe trade heel builder, and step siblings, George W., a box cutter, born 1873 in Gosport, Hampshire, William, a boot and shoe trade clicker, born 1878, Charles, an errand boy, born 1879, John, born 1880, Elizabeth, born 1881 and Mary E., born 1888 the latter five step siblings were all born in Market Harborough, Leicestershire. In March 1901 Thomas was employed as a shoe trade riveter and was residing in the family home at 7, Acre Street, Kettering, together with his father, a bricklayer, his step mother and step sibling, John, a shoe trade riveter and half blood sibling Ernest, born 1892 in Kettering.
The War Diary records: 2 Aug-17 – CANAL BANK (0.5.c.5.9.). The Commanding Officer and Captain WALKER reconnoitred the line now held by our Battalion in the morning. Enemy artillery active at intervals in rear of HOLLEBEKE and on our back areas. The trenches occupied by “A” and “C” Companies are in an exceptionally bad condition, “B” Company are in touch with the left of the LOYAL NORTH LANCASHIRE REGIMENT in the region of FORET FARM. Lieutenant Colonel KNAPP D.S.O., rejoined the Battalion at Transport Lines today.
