He was the son of George Biggs a Shoe Maker, born 1854 in Enderby, Leics., and his wife Emma, born 1856 in Whetstone, Leics. Herbert Alfred was born in 1891 in Whetstone, Leics., his siblings were George W., born 1878, Walter H., born 1879, Sarah E., born 1881, Albina H., born 1883, Beatrice M., born 1887, Arthur E., born 1890 and Horace J., born 1893, all his siblings were born in Whetstone, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Whetstone Blaby Lane, Whetstone, Leics., in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Whetstone, St. Peter. His parent later moved to reside at “Sunnyside”, Whetstone, Leics. His enlistment documents record that he gave his trade or calling as Labourer and his next of kin as his father, George Biggs of “Sunnyside,” Whetstone, Leicestershire, England. He stated that he was unmarried. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 7½ inches in height, weighed 156 pounds and had a chest measurement of 36 to 38½ inches. His complexion wqas described as fair with blue eyes and light brown hair. It was noted that he had three small scars on the inner side of his left lnee. He gave his religion as Church of England. His record of service gives the following information. 11th October 1915 embarked from Melbourne, New South Wales, Australia aboard HMAT A71 “Nestor.” 7th January 1916 taken on the strength of the 7th Battalion Australian Infantry at Tel el Kebir, Egypt. 26th March 1916 embarked at Alexandria, Egypt to join the BEF. 31st March 1916 disembarked at Marseilles, France. 9th October to 2nd Australian Field Ambulance sick. 10th October 1916 transferred to D.R.S. with scabies. 11th October 1916 admitted to 13th Australian Field Ambulance. 14th October 1916 admitted to 4th D.R.S. 13th November 1916 admitted to 25th General Hospital, Etaples, France. 22nd November 1916 discharged to duty. 23rd November 1916 marched in to 1st A.D.B.D from hospital. 27th December 1916 marched out of 1st A.D.B.D. Etaples to join unit. 29th December 1916 rejoined 7th Battalion in the field, France. 22nd July 1917 to leave England. 5th August 1917 rejoined from leave in France. 4th October 1917 wounded in action, Belgium. 4th October 1917 previously reported wounded in action, now reported wounded and missing. 24th June 1918 at a Court of Inquiry he was officially reported killed in action 4th October 1917.
