Bill Carnaby RAF, my uncle whom I never knew, was killed on active service when the Mosquito he was flying suffered loss of its tailplane, due to the fabric lifting on the leading edge. His navigator successfully bailed out, but he did not. He had fought in the Battle of Britain in a Boulton-Paul Defiant squadron which had been moved North after the Germans had sussed that these planes were not Hurricanes, and were vulnerable to frontal attack (Defiants had a four-gun aft facing turret).
