He was the son of Thomas Broom a shoemaker, born 1849 in Greetham, Rutland and his wife Elizabeth, born 1853 in Hallaton, Leics. John was born in 1890 in Tilton on the Hill, Leics., he had one sibling, a brother Allen, born 1893 in Tilton on the Hill, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Tilton on the Hill, Leics. In April 1911 John was employed as a domestic footman and was residing as a servant at 11, Stratton Street, Mayfair and Knightsbridge, Middx.
