He was the son of John and Jane Wright. James was employed on agricultural work at the time of his enlistment into the 2nd/4th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment at the age of 15. He later transferred to the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment and served with them during the Irish Rebellion of 1916, he then embarked for France on the 24th February 1917. Soon afterwards he returned home wounded and was stationed at St. Alban’s where he continued his training. He again embarked for the front, and was wounded in action on the 25th April 1918, dying of his wounds the following day, he was buried in the British Cemetery at Crouy, near Amiens. It is interesting to note that James was confirmed in France by the Bishop of London.
