The War Diary for today records. NORTH EAST OF HAMEL. Battalion in assembly positions on river ANCRE. Two Companies advanced across river at dawn and compelled to withdraw owing to strong hostile opposition. 4.00pm. Both Companies re established on west side of river, having been badly shaken. Later they were withdrawn to old front line. Remaining two Companies in assembly positions till night, when fighting patrols were sent out. These patrols remained out until --.
