He was the son of Edward Green Compton a grocer and drapery shop keeper, born 1858 in Leicester and his wife Katherine E., born 1852 in Twycross, Leics. Arthur George was born in 1893 in Swepstone, Leics., his siblings were, Cecil E., born 1890 and Francis J., born 1891, both his siblings were born in Swepstone, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at The Green, Swepstone, Newton Burgoland, Leics. In April 1911 Arthur was employed as a farm student and was residing in the family home at Newton Burgoland, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Percy, born 1888 in Swepstone, Leics., Cecil and Francis. Prior to enlistment Arthur had been engaged as a Farm Hand working for F. Compton in Annat. Information taken from his record of service shows that he was 5 foot 6 ½ inches in height and weighed 120 pounds, he had a chest measurement of between 30 ½ and 35 inches, he had a dark complexion with brown eyes and his hair colour was brown, it was noted that he had a scar on the thumbside of his left wrist and also on his right knee, he gave his religion as Baptist. He was initially with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion being transferred to the 2nd Battalion. He embarked overseas on the 14th October 1914 aboard HMNZT 11 “Athenic” bound for Suez, Egypt. His promotion record is as follows, Lance Corporal 25th September 1915, Corporal 1st February 1916 and finally Sergeant 4th March 1916.
