He was the son of Joseph Bentley a Collier, born 1845 in Swepstone, Leics., and his wife Sarah, born 1849 in Swepstone, Leics. Walter was born in 1889 in Swepstone, Leics., his siblings were Frederick, born 1879, John William, born 1880, Mary Ann, born 1882, Dora, born 1886 and Henry, born 1887, all his siblings were born in Swepstone, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Street End, Swepstone, Leics. In March 1901 Walter was a Schoolboy and was residing in the family home at Street End, Swepstone, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Frederick, John, Henry and Edith A., born 1892 in Swepstone, Leics. In April 1911 Walter was employed as a Farm Labourer and was residing in the family home at Swepstone, Leics., together with his widowed father and siblings, John and Edith. Walter later became a miner at Measham Colliery.
