He was the son of Charles Elliott, a coal miner, born 1856 in Worthington, Leics., and his wife Hannah Elliott (nee Walker, married Q2 1877 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics), born 1855 in Thringstone, Leics. Charles was born on the 24th September 1897 in Thringstone, Leics., his siblings were, Sarah Ann, born 1878 in Worthington, Leics., Kezia, born 1880, William, a coal miner, born 1884, Herbert, a labourer, born 1886, David, born 1888, Elizabeth W., born 1892 and Tom, born 1894, the latter six siblings were all born in Thringstone, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Kidgers Lane, Peggs Green, Thringstone, Leics. In April 1911 Charles was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at Peggs Green, Thringstone, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Sarah, Elizabeth, a general domestic servant and Tom, a colliery labourer. Charles enlisted on the 5th June 1917 and embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 13th August 1917, joining his unit, the Nelson Battalion on the 27th September 1918 and serving with this unit until the 17th January 1918, when he was attached to the 189th Brigade Trench Mortar Battery. He re-joined the Nelson Battalion on the 2nd February 1918, and was then attached to the 7th Entrenching Battalion on the 22nd February 1918, before being attached to the 1st Royal Marine Battalion on the 14th March 1918, serving with this unit until he was reported missing, presumed killed in action on the 24th March 1918.
