He was the son of John Curtis, a coal miner, born 1850 in Coalville, Leics., and his wife Harriet Curtis (nee Platts), born 1851 in Worthington, Leics. Thomas William was born in 1889 in Thringstone, Leics., his siblings were, Kate E., a hosiery trade hose seamer, born 1883, Harold, a coal miner and horse driver, born 1888, Herbert, born 1893 and James A., born 1894, all his siblings were born in Thringstone, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Griffydam, Leics. In April 1911 Thomas was employed as a coal miner and was residing as a boarder at 104, Warsop Vale, Shirebrook, Mansfield, Notts. On Tuesday February 20th 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL MILITARY MEDALLIST” - The name of 16636 Pte. T. Curtis, Leicestershire Regiment, appears in yesterday’s “London Gazette” among those who have recently been awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field.
