He was the son of Joseph Colver a market gardener, born 1834 in Earl Shilton, Leics., and his wife Ann, born 1840 in Earl Shilton, Leics. Alfred was born in 1876 in Earl Shilton, Leics., his siblings were, George, born 1860, William, born 1862, Elizabeth, born 1864, Hannah, born 1866, Sarah A., born 1869, Emily, born 1871 and Jonathan, born 1873, all his siblings were born in Earl Shilton, Leics., in April 1881 the family home was at Church Street, Earl Shilton, Leics. In April 1891 Alfred was employed as a shoe trade riveter and was residing in the family home at Church Street, Earl Shilton, Leics., together with his father, now a farmer, his mother and siblings, Jonathan and Emily. In March 1901 Alfred was employed as a carrier and was residing in the family home at 48, High Street, Earl Shilton, Leics., together with his wife Elizabeth Margaret, born 1877 in Earl Shilton, Leics., and their daughter Elizabeth Emma, born 1901 in Earl Shilton, Leics. In April 1911 Alfred was employed as a railway porter and was residing in the family home at Stone Bridge House, Stoney Stanton, Leics., together with his wife and their children, Elizabeth, Celia Ann, born 1903 in Earl Shilton, Leics., Alfred Cyril, born 1906 and Margaret, born 1908, the latter two siblings were both born in Stoney Stanton, Leics.
