He was the son of Thomas Jeremiah Barnett a brickmaker, born in the July quarter of 1856 in Eydon, Northamptonshire and baptised on the 27th July 1856 in the Church of St. Nicholas, Eydon (son of George Barnett, 1811 and Mary Job, 1816) and his wife Amy Sarah Barnett (nee Garner, married on the 1st March 1881 in St. Mary’s Church, Moreton Pinkney, Northamptonshire), born in the July quarter of 1860 in Moreton Pinkney and baptised on the 11th November 1860 in St. Mary’s Church Moreton Pinkney (daughter of Thomas Gardner, 1827 and Sophia Brookes, 1841). Harnet Job, a schoolboy was born on the 10th February 1886 in Eydon and baptised as Arnett Job on the 6th April 1886 in the Church of St. Nicholas, Eydon, his siblings were Clem Thomas, a schoolboy, born in the July quarter of 1881 and baptised on the 24th July 1881 in the Church of St. Nicholas, Eydon, George Gardner, a schoolboy, born on the 10th may 1883, Amy Margaret, born in the April quarter of 1888 and Will, born in the July quarter of 1890, the latter four siblings were all born in Eydon, Elsie, born on the 22nd February 1893 in Derbyshire and baptised on the 25th November 1908 in the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, Glen Parva & South Wigston, Leicestershire and Tom, born on the 23rd February 1896 in South Wigston, Leicestershire and baptised on the 25th November 1908 in the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, Glen Parva & South Wigston, in April 1891 the family home was at Eydon Hill Brickyard, Brackley, Northamptonshire.
In March 1901 Arnett was employed as an elastic trade winder and was residing in the family home at 49, Countesthorpe Road, Wigston Magna, Leicestershire together with his father, mother and siblings, George, a railway wagon repairer, William, Elsie and Tom.
In April 1911 Arnett was employed as a biscuit manufacturer’s case maker and was residing in the family home at 53, Countesthorpe Road, South Wigston, Leicestershire together with his wife, Martha Ann Barnett (nee Gothard, married on the 31st May 1909 in the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, Glen Parva & South Wigston), born on the 18th April 1886 in South Wigston (daughter of Thomas Gothard (Goddard), 1845 and Ann Storey, 1856) and their son Thomas William, born on the 31st October 1909 in South Wigston and baptised on the 8th March 1910 in the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, Glen Parva & South Wigston.
Arnett and Martha had the following children Florence Elizabeth, born on the 18th April 1911 and baptised on the 3rd September 1911 in the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, Glen Parva & South Wigston, Arthur James, born on the 1st October 1912 and baptised on the 12th November 1912 in the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, Glen Parva & South Wigston and Edna May, born on the 3rd March 1915 and baptised on the 15th April 1915 in the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, Glen Pava & South Wigston, all the children were born in South Wigston.
FAMILY NOTE: Born and officially registered at birth as Harnet Job Barnett, he was named at baptism as Arnett Job Barnett, and has since that time always been referred to by the latter names.
Arnett enlisted/attested into the Regular Army on the 10th December 1915 in Leicester, and was allotted the regimental service number 51843. He gave his age as 29 years 291 days. His marital status was given as married and his trade or calling as railway labourer. He gave his present address as 62, Bassett Street, South Wigston, Leicestershire.
He confirmed that he had previously served with 4th Bn. Leicestershire Regt. Discharged time expired 1913.
His description on enlistment recorded his apparent age as 29 years 291 days, height 5-feet 3¾ inches and chest measurement of between 33 and 35 inches. The following distinctive marks were noted, [none recorded].
He gave his next of kin as his wife, Martha Ann Barnett, 62, Bassett Street, South Wigston, Leicester.
