He was the son of Alfred Johnson Gamble, a brick yard foreman, born 1849 in Pointon, Lincs., and his wife Elizabeth Gamble (nee Needham), born 1857 in Costock, Notts. John was a brickyard labourer, and was born 1883 in Gotham, Notts, his siblings were, James S., a brick yard labourer, born 1881 in Gotham, Notts., George R., an office boy, born 1887, Daniel, born 1889, Elizabeth Jane, born 1897 and Leonard, born 1894, the latter four siblings were all born in Sileby, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Back Lane, Sileby, Leics. In April 1911, John was employed as a brickyard labourer and was residing in the family home at The Banks, Sileby, Leics., together with his wife Edith Maria Gamble (nee Johnson), born 1882 in Leicester and their children, Wilfred Leonard, born 1903 and Edith, born 1911, both children were born in Sileby, Leics. On Friday October 19th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS” – SILEBY. LOCAL SOLDIER KILLED.- Intimation has been received of the death in action in France, on September 18, of Gunner Leonard Gamble, of the Royal Field Artillery. Aged 23 years, Gunner Gamble previously lived with a brother at Sileby, who has also been killed in action, and worked at Messrs. Walker, Kempson and Stevens’ Factory in that village. His brother, Mr D. Gamble, lives at 113, Wolverton Road, Leicester. The War Diary for today records. In reserve trenches. Battn on fatigues all day repairing bund along SUWAIKEH MARSH.
