He was the son of James Edward Clarridge a shoe trade finisher, born 1874 in Leicester and his wife Ellen F., born 1875 in Kibworth, Leics. George William was born in 1898 in Leicester, his siblings were, Alice Ann, born 1897 and Ethel Frances, born 1901, both his siblings were born in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 37, Holden Street, Leicester. In April 1911 George was employed as a shoe trade finisher and was residing in the family home at King Street, Sileby, Leics., together with his father, now a boot factory manager, his mother, a shop assistant and his siblings, Alice, Ethel, Margaret Ellen, born 1906, Edward James, born 1907, Phyllis Maud, born 1908 and Evelyn, born 1910, the latter four siblings were all born in Sileby, Leics. The War Diary for today records. TRENCHES. Assembled for attack at 5.00pm. At 8.30pm attacked FOSSE 3 with C Coy on the right, B Coy on the left, D Coy in support and A Co carrying. The left Coy was held up and lost all its officers, Captain WYNNE killed, 2nd Lt FARRAR killed, 2nd Lt NELSON wounded. The right Coy went right through killing about 80 of the enemy, taking about 8 prisoners and destroying 3 machine guns and 2 trench mortars. Our casualties 5 officers and 91 other ranks.
