He was the son of Amos Betts a Conservative Club Manager, born 1859 in Sileby, Leics., and his wife Elizabeth, born 1866 in Ireland. Amos Gregory was born in 1894 in Normanton, Derbys., his siblings were, Emily, born 1888, Mabel, born 1890 and Edith May, born, 1899, all his siblings were born in Normanton, Derbys., in March 1901 the family home was at 159, Bath Street, Ilkeston, Derbys., in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Holy Trinity. In April 1911 Amos was employed as a Shoe Factory Worker and was residing in the family home at Swan Street, Sileby, Leics., together with his remarried father, and step mother, Louisa Betts a Hosiery Machinist, born 1877 in Sileby, Leics., and his sister Edith, and half brother Alfred, born 1905 in Sileby, Leics., and also his step brother, Emil Bandy, born 1898 in Sileby, Leics. On Wednesday February 28th 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “ROLL OF HONOUR” - “LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS” – Official information has been received by his parents, who live at Swan Street, Sileby, that Lance Corporal A. G. Betts, who had been reported missing since October 20th 1914, was killed in action. He went to France with the first Expeditionary Force, having served some three years in the Sherwood Foresters. He was 20 years of age. His father is an old soldier, having served 25 years in the same regiment.
